Graduation for the Class of 2011

Saturday, May 28th was the graduation ceremony for the Celina High School Graduating Class of 2011.  It was a great ceremony with wonderful speeches by members of the class, a great performance from senior choir members, and a sentimental farewell by all!  Below are pictures from the ceremony, including a great shot of the graduating class making its final march together down Wayne Street via police escort!

Character Counts @ CHS

Each school year, CHAMP (Celina High Academic and Motivational Promoters) teams up with Bill Montgomery, president and CEO of Celina Insurance Group, to sponsor Character Counts to recognize Celina High School students who show exceptional character.

Students are nominated by their teachers for the award, which includes a $50 prize to each individual. This year eight students were honored:

Kyler Conner, nominated by Marcia Smith. Kyler is a sophomore who found a credit card in the high school parking lot and immediately turned it in to the school office.

Ashley Gagle, nominated by Ruth Rumple. “Ashley has a positive attitude no matter what may happen,” Rumple wrote. “I always appreciate her upbeat attitude and willingness to listen and do what needs to be done. I feel she is an excellent representative of Celina High School.”

Kahl Knapke, nominated by Ruth Rumple. Kahl, a senior, has a very respectful and cooperative attitude in the classroom, said Rumple. “He pays attention and is an excellent example of a person with great character.”

Chris Nusbaum, nominated by Bill Sell. Chris is a senior “who has overcome tremendous obstacles to be in the National Honor Society and successful in sports, and he has a positive attitude,” Sell wrote.

Sara Smith, nominated by Linda Goodwin. Sara, a sophomore, is “one of those students who is overlooked sometimes because she is so quiet,” Goodwin wrote. She is active in her church and consistently makes good choices in her daily life.

Kristen Snyder, nominated by Marge Tobe. Kristen is a junior who has overcome adversity in the study of foreign language. “She patiently works out the answer, and she is so smart she is usually right,” Tobe wrote.

Hannah Stroth, nominated by John Higgins. Hannah, a freshman, went out of her way in Higgins’ Spanish class to help a fellow student throughout the school year. “Hannah deserves to be recognized for this kind act, which she did without being prompted,” Higgins wrote.

Andy Sutter, nominated by Jared Rolfes. Andy was nominated because “he is a great leader in school lifting class and encourages other kids in the class. He always seems to motivate other students both in class and on the football field. He is a great young man who will be a great hire in any field,” Rolfes wrote.

CHAMP, which is supported by CHS parents and community businesses and organizations, sponsors programs through the school year that recognize and encourage students to make good choices. It awards scholarships, supports teachers and staff, and recognizes students who make the honor roll, among other activities.

On Tuesday, Celina voters approved a replacement levy that will continue to support Celina City Schools.

Awards Continue with Academic Awards & Scholarship Ceremony

Monday night brought to close a whirlwind of CHS activities that began with Promenade on Friday night and concluded with the Academic Awards & Scholarship Ceremony.

Nearly 100 students in grades 9 - 12 were honored on Monday night with 168 awards.  In addition, 51 different local families or organizations presented $69,784 in scholarship money to graduating seniors.

Art Show a Success

For the 1st time ever, the CHS Art Show expanded this year with the addition of an Alumni Art Show.  Both were a display of talent from current and former CHS art students.  Quite an impressive show!  Several students were honored with many different awards, including the Principal's Award winner, Sidney N. (pictured below with Mr. Luebke).  Her artwork will be displayed for the next year in the high school office.

This year's show was bittersweet as it was the last for retiring art teacher Kathy Place.  Kathy's 30 plus years of influence on the CHS art department has certainly impacted and shaped the lives of many young people.  Mrs. Place will certainly be missed!  Art teacher Amy Sutter gave a tearful farewell speech at the end of the awards ceremony, as she described how influential Mrs. Place has been in shaping the art department and the lives of our students.  Several alumni were on hand to judge the art show and display their work.

The CHS National Honor Society Inducts New Members

On Sunday night, 36 students were inducted into the CHS chapter of the National Honor Society.  In addition, 40 seniors were recognized for their 2-year members of NHS.  These 2-year members have a 20-hour community service requirement.  However, they averaged a total of 60 hours of community service per member with more than 2,300 hours of community service total!

Three students were recognized with scholarship awards for their community service:

• Eric Muhlenkamp -- $400

Juniors that earned enough points through fundraising for the 2011 Prom spent the morning decorating at both Romer's and the Celina Fieldhouse.

The Promenade begins tonight @ 5:30 PM in the Fieldhouse -- open to the public.

Service Learning Day 2011 Report

What a day!  The 2nd annual CHS Service Learning Day was again a success.  With beautiful weather, nearly 800 students, and over 50 staff members, we certainly made a huge difference in our community.  Among the many jobs we had throughout the community on this important day, we aided in storm cleanup -- helping residents on Staeger Road and picking up debris on Havemann Road.  Our students learned a valuable lesson in the process -- serving our community can make a noticeable difference.

Here is a short list of some of our projects from 4-21-11:

• Storm damage clean-up on Havemann Road
• Storm damage clean-up on Staeger Road
• Trash clean-up on 127 (south), Mud Pike, Frahm Pike, on the Coldwater-Celina Bike Path and Franklin Township Bike Path, and in the Fairgrounds
• Hair Donations by 9 students and 2 staff members 
• Car Wash fundraiser for the Red Cross
• Cupcake Sale fundraiser for the Relay for Life
• Building Park Benches for the Conservation Department
• Helping at the Historical Society
• Aiding local Churches
• Entertaining and visiting Nursing Home residents

Serving to Learn; Learning to Serve

CHS Service Learning Day is all about giving back to the community that supports us. This year, on our 2nd annual service day, nearly 800 students and more than 50 staff members will venture out into the community to visit nursing homes, beautify our parks, paint murals, and landscape for non-profits among many other chores.
